TBR Thursday: Rurik by Lauren Smith

37581573A dragon’s prisoner… or his deepest desire?

The fiercest of a royal line of Russian dragon shifters, Rurik Barinov spends most days defending his family’s homeland from rival clans. By night, sins of the flesh — drinking, dancing, and sex — keep his volatile warrior dragon in check. Barely.

With his choice of mortal women to bed, he has no interest in changing his bad-boy ways — until a creature of molten sex poured into a tiny red satin dress steps into his nightclub. A jagged edge of raw desire nicks the impenetrable armor around his heart.

Charlotte MacQueen has been told since childhood to stay in school, live a normal life. Leave the family business — hunting down dragons — to her brothers. But tonight, she’s shed her chemist’s lab coat and infiltrated enemy lines to bag a dragon of her own.

She never expected sexy, all-too-wicked Rurik Barinov to capture her, body and soul — the perfect weapon to use against her brothers. Or that she’d fall for the brave, battle-scarred dragon shifter who covets her heart like the most precious of jewels.

Creature Feature: Witches (The Hunt)

CF_ WitchesContinuing on with my Creature Feature blog series, today we’ll be discussing witches in the paranormal romance universe of THE HUNT. Witches are powerful, magic-wielding demons. They rank high in Hell’s hierarchy, and are usually well received by their clan due to their rarity. Witches also tend to appear frequently along a witch-heavy matriarchal line.

Witches look similar to regular demons, including their all-black eyes and occasional forked tongue, but they tend to be horrifically scarred. Magic comes with a price, and all practitioners must give up a piece of themselves in order to perform spellwork. Even casting the most insignificant of hexes will require payment, and most witches choose to pay with blood.

Hell-born witches perform wandless magic, and have the ability to bestow their gift onto a worthy human. Humans require wands, or some sort of channeling tool, to cast spells, and pay for magic by giving their souls over to the demonic witch who blessed them—or cursed them—with their magical ability.

Demonic witches tend to deal in blood, sacrifice, curses, and darkness, putting them in sharp contrast with other magically-inclined supernatural creatures—fae, elves, sprites, nymphs—who lean more toward drawing strength and power from the natural world.

Known witches in THE HUNT include Severus’s cousin Cordelia, along with her mother Circe (reference only).
