I thought this was a beautifully written book. I’d watched the movie first, and while the story was so-so, the cinematography was breathtaking. The book, obviously what the movie is based on, is the perfect companion piece to the film. The details are richer. The blatant hatred between Sayuri and Hatsumomo is more nuanced and realistic. The ending was much, much more satisfying.
I can’t speak to any of the cultural aspects. Personally, I know very little about Japanese culture, but this has encouraged me to learn more. I’m really keen to read the actual memoir of the geisha Golden based his main character on, and look forward to reading more about the fascinating and secretive world of Japanese geisha.
Golden has a beautiful writing style, one that kept me engaged and interested throughout the somewhat lengthy piece. Definitely a recommended read!
